Über das Reiseziel: Inverness is the nerve centre and tourist capital of the Highlands. A bustling port city located on the picturesque banks of the Ness River is a fantastic base to explore this Scottish region that contains some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain. But this city is worth a visit in its own right. Inverness is an interesting and attractive city with a rich variety of places to visit and things to do; from ancient castles to restaurants to a cruise on Loch Ness or a stroll along the river. The city itself is small, compact and easy to get around. The castle in town, perched picturesquely above the river, dominates the horizon. The castle’s present day structure is a 19th century imposing Neo-Norman red stone fortress still surrounded by part of its original bastion wall. Below the castle, the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery gives a good general overview of the development of the Highlands while medieval Church Street is home to the town’s oldest-surviving buildings. Contrary to the lore, Inverness castle is not where Macbeth murdered King Duncan; the actual site is a moat-and-drawbridge dream, Cawdor Castle, located just east of Inverness. The beautiful gothic construction is well worth a visit if only for its dazzling gardens. The ruins of Urquhart Castle, a local and national icon and one of the most photographed sites of the region, are on the north side of the Loch. This is where most sightings of the famous monster have occurred. Nowadays, Inverness is a modern city, with all the modern accommodations and amenities one could expect from a major city. There are many lovely riverside restaurants and bustling pavement cafes as well as a wide range of specialist retailers in the historic Old Town and Victorian Market. Whether it’s roaming the streets of the city itself or heading out into the Highlands of Scotland for a day trip, Inverness definitely stands as one of those ultimately must-see destinations in the United Kingdom.

Über das Reiseziel: Fort William is the second largest settlement in the Highlands of Scotland with around 10,000 inhabitants. Fort William is a major tourist centre, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mòr to the north and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. It is a centre for hillwalking and climbing due to its proximity to Ben Nevis and many other Munro mountains. It is also known for its nearby downhill mountain bike track. You must visit the West Highland Museum, old fashioned museum of Highland history just off High Street. It´s open M-Sa 10.00 – 16.00, entrance free.

Über das Reiseziel: Oban ist ein Kurort im Verwaltungsbezirk Argyll and Bute in Schottland. Trotz seiner geringen Größe ist es die größte Stadt zwischen Helensburgh und Fort William und während der Touristensaison kann die Stadt bis zu 25.000 Menschen beherbergen. Oban liegt in einer wunderschönen Umgebung im Firth of Lorn. Die Bucht ist ein nahezu perfektes Hufeisen, geschützt durch die Insel Kerrera und jenseits von Kerrera die Insel Mull. Im Norden liegt die lange, flache Insel Lismore und die Berge von Morvern und Ardgour. HAUPTTOURISTENATTRAKTIONEN • McCaig’s Turm. Dieser Turm blickt über die Bucht von Oban. Es dauert etwa 15 Minuten, den Hügel auf einem der mehreren ausgeschilderten Wege auf Straßen oder über Treppen hinaufzugehen. Es gibt gute Aussichten auf Kerrera und Mull und den Blick auf den Sound of Mull. • Dunollie Schloss. Auch bekannt als Dunoille Schloss. Alter Sitz der MacDougalls von Lorn. Ein kleines Schloss am weit entfernten Ende der Bucht vom Bahnhof. • Dunstaffnage Schloss. Ein Schloss etwa drei Meilen nördlich von Oban. • Kriegs- und Friedensmuseum. Museum, das die Rolle Obans in den Weltkriegen darstellt. Auf der Corran Esplanade, nördlich vom North Pier, neben dem Regent Hotel. Täglich geöffnet von 10.00 - 16.00 Uhr von März bis November. Der Eintritt ist frei, Spenden werden akzeptiert.

Über das Reiseziel: Edinburgh, die Hauptstadt des mittelalterlichen Königreichs Schottland, ist wohl die schönste Stadt Nordeuropas. Edinburgh, immer noch das Zentrum der autonomen Verwaltungseinrichtungen Schottlands, ist weder zu modernisiert, um kalt zu sein, noch zu groß, um unattraktiv zu sein. Mittelalterliche Gassen gruppieren sich um eine imposante Burg, elegante Stadthäuser aus dem 18. Jahrhundert umrahmen üppige Parks und Kultur blüht auf. Das Edinburgh Castle ist das unbestrittene Herzstück der Stadt und ragt kilometerweit an Straßenecken ins Blickfeld. Die Queen Margaret's Chapel aus dem 11. Jahrhundert, das älteste Gebäude Edinburghs, befindet sich innerhalb der Burgmauern. Auf dem Weg zum Palast kommen Sie an der mittelalterlichen Behausung Gladstone's Land und Lady Stair's House vorbei, einem Stadthaus aus dem 17. Jahrhundert, das Erinnerungsstücke an Schottlands literarische Dreifaltigkeit von Burns, Scott und Stevenson enthält. Die letzte Runde der Meile, der Altstadt der Stadt, ist die Canongate Tolbooth, in der sich das People's Story Museum befindet und eines der bekanntesten Wahrzeichen ist. Für einen weiten Blick auf die Stadt erklimmen Sie den Arthur's Seat, einen schlafenden Vulkan im Holyrood Park. Calton Hill bietet auch einen schönen Blick auf Edinburgh. Aber Edinburgh hat mehr zu bieten als nur Sightseeing. Für etwas urbanes Flair solltest du in Stockbridge vorbeischauen, einer malerischen Gemeinde voller Studenten, Coffeeshops und guter Pubs. Jedes Jahr im August feiert die Stadt das Edinburgh International Festival, drei Wochen lang Musik, Theater, Oper und Tanz vom Feinsten. Tausende von kulturinteressierten Besuchern versammeln sich hier und die Stadt tut ihr Bestes, um sie bei Laune zu halten.
